A Different Way to Look at Independence Day
On this American Independence Day, I salute and thank all people, alive and dead, who have helped in any way to win and maintain our independence, as well as the liberty, rights and privileges guaranteed by our Constitution. It has been an epic struggle by loyal freedom-loving Americans against internal and external foes who have wished to end the great American experiment we call democracy. These struggles have led to monumental wars that have tested the spirit and bravery of the nation, and we owe our eternal gratitude to those who came to the rescue of our nation in war, . We also owe our gratitude on this Independence Day to all who have struggled mightily against those forces within the nation – that would deny the protection guaranteed by the constitution to anyone whom they deem unworthy of being American. Finally, to those who suffer wrongs as a consequence of those misguided forces, we owe a promise that the nation will provide for your protection – as required by the moral imperatives guaranteed by our Constitution.
I believe that the paragraph below, which is a modified version of the last paragraph from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, is as appropriate on this occasion as it was when Lincoln delivered his address at Gettysburg in 1863.
“It is rather for us to be dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and independence, we take increased devotion to their cause to which they gave so much – that we henceforth highly resolve that all Americans to whom we owe so much shall not have struggled in vain – and that this nation under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

Very appropriate post for Independence Day. Lincoln has always been my favorite historical person. Many underestimated Lincoln’s intelligence – he was a very smart man and extremely kind. We could use some Lincolns in Washington D,C, right now.

The children came by and we fired fireworks off in the yard. I am glad we have a metal roof on our house because several things landed on it from the fireworks. Ha Glad you had a nice 4th also.
